How to Customize YouTube Kids

YouTube Kids can be a great resource when set up properly. Here’s how to customize it for your family’s needs.

Getting Started

First, download the YouTube Kids app from your device’s app store. The app is available for both iOS and Android devices, as well as smart TVs.

Setting Up a Profile

When you first open the app, you’ll be guided through creating a profile for your child:

  • Enter your child’s birth year
  • Choose an age-appropriate content level
  • Enable or disable search functionality

Content Controls

YouTube Kids offers several levels of content filtering:

  • Preschool (Ages 4 and under): Simpler videos focused on creativity, learning, and play
  • Younger (Ages 5-8): Songs, cartoons, and educational content
  • Older (Ages 9-12): Additional content including music videos and gaming

Blocking Unwanted Content

If you find a video that isn’t appropriate:

  1. Tap the three dots on the video
  2. Select “Block this video” or “Block this channel”
  3. The content will no longer appear in your child’s feed

Timer Settings

Set limits on how long your child can watch:

  1. Go to the lock icon in the corner
  2. Enter your passcode
  3. Select “Timer”
  4. Choose the duration

Our Recommendation

While YouTube Kids has improved its filtering, we still recommend co-viewing when possible and regularly checking the watch history to ensure content aligns with your family’s values.
